I found a fabulous artist on Etsy! Here is my interview with Victoria Hunter McKenzie, and be sure to check out some of her fabulous items below!!!

Let's start with the basic intro - what is your name?

Victoria Hunter McKenzie, or aka VH McKenzie.

Tell us about yourself. Are you married, have children?

I'm married, a working mother of 2 girls now in their young teens. By day I work as a computer graphics artist/designer for ABC News in NYC. We live downtown in the East Village of Manhattan.

What sort of items do you have in your shop?

Right now I have original drawings, paintings and collages in my shop and a large quantity of prints of much of my work. I'm only offering some of my originals for sale but have prints available for virtually all of my work.

How long have you been doing your craft?

I've been pursuing art since my last years of college (far too long ago!) where I discovered a love for drawing and painting. Since my graduation from Brown University, where I pursued a more academic career with a degree in History, I've also attended Parsons School of Design here in NYC. I've also studied privately with abstract expressionist painter Beverly Brodsky. I credit Ms. Brodsky with really mentoring me and pushing my skills forward. Without her encouragement I never would have considered commiting so much of my time and passion to art -- she was a godsend.

Where do you get your inspiration from for your work?

More recently, within the past decade I suppose, I've found much of my inspiration from my travels to the caribbean. My husband was born and raised on the island of Jamaica and we return annually to visit family and friends. One look at the bulk of my work and you will see the island's influences everywhere. There is so much natural beauty in Jamaica, both in the landscape and in her people, yet there is also great hardship. I think I tend to see the melancholy of such a naturally beautiful place.

How long have you had your Etsy shop?

I believe I first opened an account on Etsy in the late fall of 2008 but didn't actually get my shop opened and running until the late spring of 2009. I've been selling for just over a year. I chose Etsy after much consideration. I was familiar with all of the wonderful success stories I'd seen on Martha Stewart's show, for one, which gave the impression of a cadre of professional, skilled artistans selling their wares directly to the public. I thought it was a beautifully designed site, much more appealing than Ebay, for example, and I liked the fact that it was dedicated to handmade items. It seemed the best fit to sell art work.

Do you have any upcoming projects that you want to share with us?

As far as upcoming projects, I'm looking for ways to expand what I offer while still staying true to my art work. I'm thinking of expanding to offer greeting or note cards with my work. I'm also considering a line of work that appeals to children -- such as an alphabet series with tropical illustrations, for example.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED

Expect the unexpected - that would be a great title for a book on parenthood. Just when you think you've got your kids figured out, BAM you get hit with a surprise. My oldest daughter is 15 years old, and I really thought I had lucked out with her - she's not your typical teenager. She is a great kid, not into smoking or drugs or drinking, she is a lover of Jesus and not afraid to let the world know it, she loves spending time with her mother (which is so not what I wanted to do at age 15) . . . and she now suffers from depression, anxiety, panic attacks, and anorexia. Yep - that was the "unexpected" we were hit with this summer.

I can truly say that if it can happen to my child, it can happen to anyone's child. Lauren has always been a social, outgoing, fun girl who all of a sudden became a terrified, sad, alone little girl. And to top it all off, there is no "reason" for it; it just happened. I guess in hindsight I should have known it could happen - I just didn't think it would happen to her - the "good" child.

She comes from a family with a history of depression/anxiety - on both sides of the family, but I still didn't see it happening to her. But it did, and now we are dealing with it. I know there are many people out there who would disagree with our decision to put her on medication, but therapy alone was not working. And, two weeks on medication, and we had our child back. Now that's not to say that we gave her a pill and fixed her. No, the problems are still there, but she can at least function like a "normal" person now.

I guess I just wanted to share this with people because like I said before, if it can happen to my little girl, it can happen to yours. All I can advise it that you pay attention to your kids and don't think that just because your child seems okay, that one sign that something is not okay needs to be looked at and not ignored.

So yes, expect the unexpected - parenthood summed up in one phrase.

ARTIST FEATURE - WENDY BROWN

I have another jewelry artist to share with you today. Her work is fun and funky! Here is my interview with Wendy Brown, and be sure to check out some of her fabulous items below!!!

Let's start with the basic intro - what is your name?

My name is Wendy Brown. My nickname is Bean. My best friend of 19 years gave me the nickname because I liked to wear beanie hats.

Tell us about yourself. Are you married, have children?

I'm engaged to my soul mate Bill. I met him 2 years ago after I divorced my husband of 8 years. I have 2 children with my ex and my fiance has 3 kids. His youngest lives with us. We are planning to marry as soon as we can save a little money for a nice small outdoor wedding. We have 3 cats, one huge dog, and a turtle. We work together in our workshop and I make jewelry while my fiance makes wire sculptures. We both have shops on Etsy and do this for a living.

What sort of items do you have in your shop?

I make beaded necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. I love using gemstones and copper. I also love making wire wrapped rings and earrings. I make brooches and watch charm bracelets also. I use healing gemstones and describe the properties when applicable. I enjoy making bold, unique, and colorful jewelry that may be described as bohemian.

How long have you been doing your craft?

I have been making jewelry full time for 5 years. I made simple jewelry before that since I was a child, but started developing my craft 5 years ago when I was pregnant with my 2nd child.

Where do you get your inspiration from for your work?

I am inspired by the colors of nature, different textures, unique beads, anything copper, abstract paintings, and my quirky life in general!

How long have you had your Etsy shop?

I opened my Etsy shop in early March 2010. I joined Etsy in 2009 as a shopper. I love handmade things much more than anything store bought. I decided to open my shop because all of my friends were buying from me and suggested I open a shop. Etsy was the only logical choice! I haven't looked back since and my sales are steadily increasing.

Do you have any upcoming projects that you want to share with us?

My newest endeavor is custom ordered wire wrapped rings with choice of silver or copper wire and choice of stone or glass color. I am also a group Officer for the facebook group It's Better Handmade. We share and promote fellow handmade artisans on facebook.

OH TO DREAM!

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be? I am not too picky on the actual country or state, but I do know I would LOVE to live in a mountain cabin, secluded in the woods, away from the rest of the world. Huh . . . wonder what that says about me? It probably means that I've had enough of people!

I really can just picture it in my head - a long winding driveway that takes you deep into the woods and a huge cabin surrounded by trees. Inside there would of course be a cozy fireplace for those cold winter nights.

Okay I must stop thinking about it, because that dream is far off unfortunately.

So, what about you. Where would you live if you could pick any place?

THOSE CRAZY FINNS!

I heard about this funny sport that was created in Finland. I thought it was a joke until I searched the internet and found out it is oh so real. It's called Wife Carrying. The name says it all. Here is the description I found on Wikipedia:

Wife carrying is a sport in which male competitors race while each carrying a female teammate. The objective is for the male to carry the female through a special obstacle track in the fastest time. The sport was first introduced at Sonkajärvi, Finland. Several types of carry may be practised: piggyback, fireman's carry (over the shoulder), or Estonian-style (the wife hangs upside-down with her legs around the husband's shoulders, holding onto his waist). Major wife-carrying competitions are held in Sonkajärvi, Finland (where the prize depends on the wife's weight in beer); Monona, Wisconsin; Minocqua, Wisconsin; and Marquette, Michigan. The North American Wife Carrying Championships take place every year on Columbus Day Weekend in October at Sunday River Ski Resort in Newry, Maine. The 8th Annual event took place on October 6, 2007, with 40 couples participating, an all-time high. Many North American Champions go on to compete in the Finnish World Championship.

Why . . . how did someone come up with . . . what????? Well we must see this to believe it.

Can I just say that the beer drinking part of this is my favorite part of the whole sport!?! I love the Finns!

A HEAVY HEART

I write today with a heavy heart. The best friend I ever had in my life died this weekend. She was only 41 years old - too short a life to be lost to us. One of the saddest things is that we had just found each other after being separated by time and turmoil. To finally find her and now have her gone . . . it's just not fair. But who do I blame? Myself for letting us become separated in the first place? God for taking her too young? Who do I blame?

My brain knows the answer is that there is no one to blame. Dying is just a part of life, and some of us are taken sooner than others. But my heart doesn't want to hear what my brain has to say right now, and I know it's just part of the grieving process. My head says it's a blessing because she had suffered for so long. My heart says screw that, she was too young. My head says to remember all the good times and know she is in a better place now. My heart says we had just found each other and didn't have time to make up all that lost time.

And so the grieving process begins.

How long have you been doing your craft?

I have been sewing and crafting since I was very little. My mom taught me how to sew, knit, and crochet. When my girls were small, I used to make their clothes and Halloween costumes. I also used to custom make all the drapes and home accessories in our home. If friends or family needed something made, they would ask me to design and create it for them.

Where do you get your inspiration from for your work?

I was inspired to start making handbags when I couldn't find I bag big enough to hold my things with the type of pockets I wanted. I also became tired of leather handbags and wanted to create accessories for women that were unique, different but also practical.

CELL PHONES, LAND LINES OR BOTH

So a few years ago we switched from having cell phones and a land line to having just cell phones. I had wanted to make the switch for a while, but it was like I had some big fear of not having a land line. It seems silly now that I think about it, but at the time, I really had anxiety about it. Maybe because it was new and different. I mean, I had always grown up in a house with a phone - it was "normal."

Makes me wonder if that's how previous generations felt when telephones first became "normal" for everyone to have in their homes. I wonder if people were anxious of the change.

LET'S GIVE THIS ONE MORE TRY

For 15 years now, I've been fighting that ole weight battle. I so remember those days when I could eat whatever I wanted and never had to exercise, and I would not gain a pound. But it seems like ever since I had my oldest daughter 15 years ago, I just cannot lose weight. Well, let me clear that up - I can lose the weight; I just can't keep it off. How many of us out there suffer from this? Too many that's for sure. I've tried it all: Weight Watchers - lost a ton of weight . . . gained it back; Jenny Craig - lost a ton of weight . . . gained it back; Biggest Loser book and DVDs - lost a ton of weight . . . gained it back; and so on and so on.

Well I am not one to give up, so today I will begin trying again. This time though I'm just gonna exercise and eat smaller portions. And, I may regret this, but . . . I am going to keep a monthly log right here on this blog. Maybe a little public humiliation will give me the push I need. Now, I can't post my weight for you (thank God) because I recently threw our scale in the garbage - I decided that scales are evil! But I will post a picture of myself so you can see the progress I make and my measurements (***GASP***).

So here are the starting pictures - please note that I did this like they do in the commercials with no make-up and my hair not done:

I have an amazing artist to share with you today. I first found her on Facebook and became an instant fan of her work. If I could be half as good as her, I would be happy. Let's start with the basic intro - what is your name?

My name is Marie Frazier.

Tell us about yourself. Are you married, have children?

I am married for 23 years, with 2 awesome children, who are my pride and joy. Zane is my son, and he is almost 24 yrs old, Keisha is my daughter, who is now 22 years old. I have 1 grandbaby (my daughter), and his name is Gabriel. My son-in-law is a wonderful guy, who loves my daughter with all his heart, and he too is 22 years old, and is now serving our country in the Navy.

What sort of items do you have in your shop?

What I have in my shop is handmade wire wrapped gem stone pendants, bracelets, and keychains. I carry a few supplies as well in my shop, but my main focus is my jewelry.

How long have you been doing your craft?

I started collecting rocks in May of 2009, from a rock pit behind my house, in September of 2009 I started wire wrapping, and have progressed from there. I also do rock tumbling, and cabochon making, all of the Lake Superior Agates in my shop were cabbed by me.

Where do you get your inspiration from for your work?

My inspiration comes from many many different things, but mostly the beauty of the stones, and the peace of mind they provide me

How long have you had your Etsy shop?

I opened my Etsy shop in January of 2010. The decision to do this came from, originally, needing to recover some expenses for the craft/hobby, so I could continue doing it. Someone suggested I try it, so I did.

Do you have any upcoming projects that you want to share with us?

Upcoming projects are including some new necklaces I have on my mind, and I will be posting some instructional kits really soon, which will include photo & written wire wrapping instructions, wire, and a gemstone to wrap.

CATS OR DOGS . . . OR BOTH?

A few weeks ago, we got my oldest daughter an adorable little kitten.

This latest addition brings our pet total to two cats and one dog . . . which brings me to an interesting question. It seems like my family is a rarity when it comes to pets because we love cats and dogs. I have gotten comments that lead me to believe that other people have either cats or dogs, not cats and dogs. What is that all about? I just find it odd that people think we are odd for having both types of pets.

So what do you think? Is it just me being sensitive, or is there really a pet prejudice out there?!?

The Ole Breakfast Debate

So school starts for my girls this coming Thursday - which by the way bothers me and my OCD - a week can't start on a Thursday! But, that's a topic for another day. What I wanted to discuss today is the old breakfast debate - homemade breakfast for the kids before school or breakfast in a box. I know when I was working outside of the home, I never had time to make breakfast for the girls before school. But, now that I work at home, on my own schedule, I have the option of making my girls homemade breakfasts every morning. Hmmmmmmm - is breakfast in a box really all that bad? I mean am I lazy because I REALLY don't want to wake up early every morning to make the girls breakfast? Is it really all that bad to give them a bowl of cereal or a frozen waffle every now and then?

Let's debate it friends. Let's settle this once and for all . . . or just argue amongst ourselves for the fun of it! Comment below and let me know: Homemade breakfast or breakfast in a box?

My name is Renae Schoeffel.

Tell us about yourself. Are you married, have children?

I am 36 years old. I have been married for 11 years, and I have three beautiful children, ages: 10, 3, and 1 1/2.

What sort of items do you have in your shop?

I am a Modern Abstract Artist. I use Acrylic paint on canvas to express my passion. My paintings are vibrant, bold, modern, organic, and kind-of eccentric! :) I love to create something from a blank canvas. It amazes me every time, what transpires. I also create prints of my original paintings.

How long have you been doing your craft?

I have been painting professionally for only two years now. I love what I’m doing. I create something new every day.

How long have you had your Etsy shop?

I have only been with Etsy for a short while, but have been blessed with a successful start.

Do you have any upcoming projects that you want to share with us?

I have just signed with an online Gallery called Native Motif. I am currently their featured artist, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how this business relationship develops

ARTIST FEATURE - ANU SUBRAMANIAN

I have another wonderful artist to share with you today! Here is my interview with Anu Subramanian, and be sure to check out some of her fabulous items below!!!

Let's start with the basic intro - what is your name?

Hi, my name is Anu Subramanian.

Tell us about yourself. Are you married, have children?

I am happily married, and a mom of a wonderful, energetic boy who is just about to turn five.

What sort of items do you have in your shop?

I currently am selling mostly functional handmade, one of a kind, ceramic pieces. I have everything from bowls, mugs and platters to whimsical teapots and creamers, and soap dishes. I also have small sculptures, and cards with small original watercolors.

How long have you been doing your craft?

I have been painting and making hand built and wheel thrown ceramics since 2002.

Where do you get your inspiration from for your work?

My inspiration comes from so many places. From flora and fauna to dancers and to abstract designs in the shadows and light of everyday objects. My “All I want for Christmas is a pony teapot” was actually inspired by the motor from an automatic window in a car! I also love the human form and the intricacies of the human face.

How long have you had your Etsy shop and what made you decide to take that step to open it?

I have had my Etsy shop since September 2009.

As much as I love ceramics, I could not justify the expense of a setting up a full blown studio for myself until I met my friend Tracey Crockett. The mother of three, two under the age of five at the time, she had the same reservations as I did. Together, however, we were less intimidated by the commitment of both time and money that it would take to make our dreams a reality. Fate also seemed to be on our side. Using amazing bargains found on Craig’s list for almost 75% of the building materials, Tracey’s incredibly supportive and talented husband built our amazing studio in her backyard. We combined our existing equipment and jointly bought two kilns. With that, Serenity Pottery Studio was born.

The next step was the dreaded task of marketing. Tracey and I had both sold in student sales but not in any other venue. A big on-line shopper herself, it was Tracey who convinced me that we should start our own Etsy shops. The rest is history.

Do you have any upcoming projects that you want to share with us?

Although it is still in the planning process, I hope to start selling tea bowls very soon that will raise money for the pennies for peace foundation on my website. This is the organization started by Greg Mortenson, the author of Three Cups of Tea. Greg Mortenson and the charity that he has created has built more than 140 schools in rural parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan. These schools provide education to thousands of children (especially girls) who might never have had the chance without him. His efforts have done so much to promote peace in those regions that his books have become required reading for all top military officials deployed to those areas and beyond. After attending a lecture by him, I recently had the privilege to shake his hand and briefly speak to him at his book signing. I have never been so inspired to help a cause.

My shop features clutch purses exclusively.

I've been sewing and designing for well over 30 years. Clutch purses are my latest mania!

Where do you get your inspiration from for your work?

My inspiration can come from just about anywhere. I have a mad passion for fabrics and colour. I love the feel and texture of the fabric and I love the whole process of designing, coordinating fabric, texture and colour.

How long have you had your Etsy shop and what made you decide to take that step to open it?

I opened my Etsy shop in June of 2009. I saw a feature on Etsy on Martha Stewart's program and thought it was something I'd try.

I'm thinking about running a special promotion for my 1st anniversary coming up in June. Not sure exactly sure what yet.

Yes, it's actually me! I know I have been absent from blogging for a while. Been dealing with my daughter's health issues and also trying to balance every day life. Let's start with the basic intro - what are your names?

Our names are Toni and Alexandra.

Tell us about yourselves. Are you married, have children?

We are a mother/daughter business team. I (Alexandra) am a newlywed with no children and enjoy traveling, shopping and experimenting in the kitchen. My mom (Toni) is the proud mother of 3 adult children and 4 grandchildren. In her spare time she enjoys writing, watching movies and spending time with family.

What sort of items do you have in your shop?

Our shop has a unique variety of soap bars including ones that look and smell like chocolates, candy and other sweet treats!

How long have you been doing your craft?

Our soap shop was officially formed in 2005 after Toni was looking for a way to generate income while being able to daycare for her grandchildren. That's when she found soap crafting. She was an art major in college and always dreamed of doing something artistic for a living, but circumstances never allowed for it. That's when she enlisted me as her business partner, and we put our creative heads together to form Clean Confections Soap Shop.

Where do you get your inspiration from for your work?

Although our line of soaps is mostly food based, we're always looking for ways to create unique and fun soaps. We draw inspiration from everywhere - cookbooks, food network, while at the grocery store, playing with my nieces and nephew. We take the things we love and create them in soap.

How long have you had your Etsy shop and what made you decide to take that step to open it?

We started selling on Etsy in October 2009, so we're still relatively new. We decided to open an Etsy shop because it was a way to expand our business and provided a forum for us to more openly communicate with the public, and find out what interests future customers.

Do you have any upcoming projects that you want to share with us?

We are starting a new line of Fortune Cookie soaps that we absolutely LOVE! Two of the new designs are now available on Etsy. We will continue to add new products each season.

Kim Brennan. My shop name is HELPING HANDS POTTERY. My sign on name is CLAYPATTIES.

I am a divorced mother of three children with one child that lives with me...I have a 14 year old, 16 and 19 year old.

What sort of items do you have in your shop?

In my shop, I have pottery and sculpture that is made out of stoneware clay and high fired to be food safe with high fire glazes.

How long have you been doing your craft?

I have been working with clay since 1997, but recently only started doing pottery more as a part-time job because of my divorce.

Where do you get your inspiration from for your work?

I get my inspiration from McCoy pottery that my mother used to collect from antique shops.

I have had my shop for almost two years, and I opened it because a friend suggested Etsy to me as a good way for people to see my art internationally.

My name is Pei Li.

Tell us about yourself. Are you married, have children?

I live with my family in Singapore, I hold a full time job, and making 1:12 scale miniatures is my passion.

What sort of items do you have in your shop?

Since I have a weakness for desserts, patisseries, you will find a lot of that in my shop. They are however inedible, and are in dollhouse miniature scale. :) But, I also like shabby chic style furnitures, home decor items, so I am slowly branching out and making these too.

How long have you been doing your craft?

I have always been into crafting since I was a child, but I started miniatures about 4 years ago.

Where do you get your inspiration from for your work?

I get my inspiration from everywhere - patisserie shops, cook books, internet, magazines, or sometimes an idea would just come into my mind when I'm travelling on the bus.

How long have you had your Etsy shop and what made you decide to take that step to open it?

I had my Etsy shop active in sometime late 2009 although I had it earlier and left it empty for several months. I was thinking maybe there would be people who were trying to find the type of desserts or patisseries I make, and I was hoping to find a place where I can share my creations with others.

Do you have any upcoming projects that you want to share with us?

I always have many upcoming projects and ideas that are in my head, and I sometimes do jot it down on a book. The reality is I'm tied up with my full time job so I really have limited time for creating miniatures. But I have visions of creating another patisserie shelf filled with mouth watering desserts.

Well, at least I think I'm back. Between illnesses, starting to homeschool my oldest daughter, working on building my Avon business, and just everyday life . . . I have neglected my little blog here and my Etsy shops. I think I am at a point where I can give everything a little bit of my attention now - we shall see!

Let's start with the basic intro - what is your name?

My name is Heidi Fahrenbacher (Fair-en-bac-er).

Tell us about yourself. Are you married, have children?

I live in rural SW Michigan with my best friend Joe, and we have a dog and two cats. My studio is in an old chicken coop, where my retired father Fritz helps me. I teach ceramics at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, but creating and selling ceramics is what I do full-time.

What sort of items do you have in your shop?

The work in my shop is functional porcelain. I love the smoothness of porcelain and how beautiful glazes look on their surface.

How long have you been doing your craft?

I took my first pottery class at 15 and am now 29. I was a Fine Arts and Art History Major in college and started Bella Joy pottery in 2005.

Where do you get your inspiration from for your work?

I'm inspired by old barns, old fences, vegetables, and flowers. If it were feasible, I would just make vases. I really enjoy coming up with new flower vase ideas.

How long have you had your Etsy shop and what made you decide to take that step to open it?

I opened my shop in 2007, but it remained empty until 2008. I was so busy with art fairs and galleries; I neglected my shop. 2009 was a much better year! I joined the Etsy Mudteam and learned a lot from the other members. I decided to open my store because art fairs are really tiring and galleries take a large commission.

I'm part of a group exhibition "Art That Works...An Inspiration" which opened January 9, 2010, and will run until March 20, 2010, at the Ella Sharp Museum in Jackson, MI(www.ellasharp.org).

SLOW DOWN!

Ever feel like everything around you is going way too fast and you just want to shout SLOW DOWN?!?! I'm feeling that way right now. I feel like there's too much to do and not enough time to do it. And, because of that feeling, I don't want to do anything. I feel like I'm letting my family down with this attitude . . . and I guess I'm letting myself down too.

Maybe it just comes down to a lack of organization. But, if I had time to organize myself, I wouldn't be in this mess!

Lack of time seems to be the story of my life. I don't remember a time when I wasn't saying to myself "well I'd do this if I had enough time or I'd do that if I had enough time." Is there ever a time when there's enough time?!?

Share your thoughts and stories with me - any ideas or advice?

I found another fabulous artist while browsing through Etsy! Today's featured artist is Pam Van Londen. Here is my interview with Pam, and be sure to check out some of her fabulous items below!!!

Let's start with the basic intro - what is your name?

I'm Pam Van Londen.

Tell us about yourself. Are you married, have children?

I live and work in Corvallis, Oregon. I have two children and one grandchild. I teach technology courses at Oregon State University and Linn Benton Community College as well as paint (nearly) every day and develop web sites for small businesses.

What sort of items do you have in your shop?

My Etsy shop is full of paintings. Most are framed 8x8 original oil or acrylic paintings.

How long have you been doing your craft?

I started painting when I was 12 but got serious about it during my trip to France in 1997 and around the USA (by motorhome) in 2005.

Where do you get your inspiration from for your work?

Most of my work is painted plein air or from photos I take. And sometimes I just make it up. I love abstract paintings and practice different techniques for loosening up.

How long have you had your Etsy shop and what made you decide to take that step to open it?

I am always on the look out for a place to sell my paintings. I don't enjoy the Ebay selling or buying experience as much as I do the Etsy experience. And Etsy provides a wider audience than I have received from my http://pamvanlonden.com site.

Do you have any upcoming projects that you want to share with us?

I am showing my daily paintings on the http://dailypaintersabstract.blogspot.com gallery and at a local retail store called the Mod Pod.

Let's start with the basic intro - what is your name?

My Name is Peg Lozier.

Tell us about yourself. Are you married, have children?

I live in Las Vegas, Nevada and have several 4-legged children but none of the conventional 2-legged variety. I'm a part-time consultant in accounting and a full-time artist.

How long have you been doing your craft?

I've been involved in art one way or another all my life, with an emphasis on watercolor for the last 15 years.

Where do you get your inspiration from for your work?

I love to paint portraits that are light filled and light hearted, but any subject that has a beautiful interplay of light and shadow is of interest to me. I also get a kick out of painting old furniture and giving it a new lease on life.

How long have you had your Etsy shop and what made you decide to take that step to open it?

I have two shops on Etsy, Peggitha for all my paintings and portrait work and PeggithasPieces for the furniture and gifty type stuff. A year or so ago, someone had mentioned Etsy to me and I figured, heck, why not? And I'm happy to report that Etsy has really been great.

Do you have any upcoming projects that you want to share with us?

Along with doing the portrait work, I've been developing a line of dog breed art nouveau inspired pieces, some of which are in my shop. Lately, I find that I am really interested in doing illustrative work and would love to try my hand at children's illustration.

I'm separated and have one daughter who is almost 4. Her name is Petula.

What sort of items do you have in your shop?

I have all sorts of items - for pregnant women, plus size, winter coats (fabric from Italy). My big sellers are dresses.

How long have you been doing your craft?

I've been doing my craft for 11 years.

Where do you get your inspiration from for your work?

I'm inspired by trash magazines. I used to think Vogue was the fashion bible. I realized about 6 years ago that the real inspiration is Hollywood stars.

How long have you had your Etsy shop and what made you decide to take that step to open it?

I opened about 2 years ago and was referred by a friend that was already on Etsy.

Do you have any upcoming projects that you want to share with us?

My upcoming project is that I'm launching my full-figured spring/summer collection in August for 2011.

ALWAYS QUESTIONING

I find myself always questioning my decisions in life - not just the major ones, but the little ones as well. Did I make the right decision to be a stay-at-home mom, am I feeding my kids the right foods, am I a good mom . . . wait one second . . . did you notice that all those questions dealt with being a mom? I wonder if father's ask themselves these same kind of questions. It seems like lately I've been consumed with these questions - probably because I am a stay-at-home mom now and that's my only job.

I thought that being a working mom was the most difficult thing in the world, but maybe I was wrong. When I was working outside of the home, I never asked myself if I was a bad mom - I just felt that I was a bad mom with no questions asked. My kids were under the watchful eye of others from 6:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.; by the time I got home, I did not want to cook dinner, give them baths, help with homework - and I felt angry with the kids for MAKING me do those things. Then, when I had those thoughts of anger, I would feel guilty for being such a shitty mom - it was just a constant state of being angry and sad. My kids deserved so much more than they were getting - they deserved to have their mom.

So, when my hubby re-entered military life, we decided that I would stay at home with the kids. Now I question every single thing I do from the minute I wake up - maybe that's because this is all new to me - I mean I've had children for 14 years, but I've never really felt like I was a mom until I was with the kids full-time.

Don't get me wrong, I am so much more happier now that I have more time for my kids . . . I just wish this constant questioning would stop. Does it ever stop? Do we really ever feel satisfied with the job we are doing as moms? I know, I know - more questions!
